China headhunter SunTzu Recruit has learned that on January 19, the State Council Information Office held a press conference on the development of industry and information technology in 2023, where relevant officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) introduced the development achievements of 2023.
Manufacturing Industry Maintains Global Lead for 14 Consecutive Years
“In 2023, the ‘combination punch’ of policies to stabilize growth was effective, with the added value of industrial enterprises above a designated size increasing by 4.6% year-on-year, up 1 percentage point from 2022, and the added value of manufacturing above a designated size increasing by 5.0% year-on-year,” said Xin Guobin, Vice Minister of MIIT.
He pointed out that throughout 2023, the industrial economy showed a stable and upward trend with a positive outlook. The growth areas of provinces and industries both expanded, and the role of stabilizers in the top ten key industries and ten major industrial provinces became prominent. The overall scale of the manufacturing industry has ranked first in the world for 14 consecutive years. The influence of the “New Three” (new energy vehicles, solar photovoltaic, and lithium-ion batteries) continued to increase, with product exports exceeding one trillion yuan for the first time. The market share of shipbuilding has ranked first in the world for 14 consecutive years.
“In 2024, the internal and external environment for the industrial economy remains severe and complex, but China has advantages such as a complete industrial system, a large market scale, and a well-developed information infrastructure. Especially after the National Conference on the Advancement of New Industrialization, strong momentum has been gathered to support industrial development, and the long-term positive trend of the industrial economy will not change,” said Xin Guobin.
Car Exports Expected to Reach Global First for the First Time
“Last September, the World New Energy Vehicle Congress was held in Munich, Germany. At the exhibition, some technical experts spent a long time studying the cars and told us that China’s innovative products are indeed progressing rapidly and well, with high levels of intelligence and good quality, giving very positive evaluations.”
Xin Guobin noted that the automobile industry is an important pillar industry in China and has received attention both domestically and internationally in recent years. Last year, China’s total car exports reached 4.91 million units, a year-on-year increase of 57.9%, and are expected to reach the global first for the first time. Among these, new energy vehicle exports were 1.203 million units, a year-on-year increase of 77.6%.
“In 2024, the production and sales of China’s automobile industry are expected to achieve stable growth, and new energy vehicles will continue to maintain a good development trend.” Xin Guobin said that industry associations estimate that in 2024, the production and sales of the automobile industry can reach 31 million units, a slight increase of about 3% year-on-year. The production and sales of new energy vehicles will also reach around 11.5 million units, with a growth of about 20%.
Going forward, the MIIT will support enterprises in carrying out joint innovation, increasing efforts in the research and development of automotive chips, solid-state batteries, and high-level autonomous driving technology, and further enhancing the market competitiveness of products. The ministry will organize the implementation of intelligent connected vehicle access and “vehicle-road-cloud integration” application pilots, accelerate the construction of roadside sensing, networked cloud control, and other infrastructure, further improve the standards system for vehicle-end, roadside, and network-end, and further promote the commercial application of intelligent connected vehicles.
5G Mobile Users Reach 805 Million
In 2023, the MIIT steadily advanced the innovative development of 5G in China, achieving positive results.
Zhao Zhiguo, the spokesperson and chief engineer of the MIIT, introduced that by the end of last year, the number of 5G mobile users reached 805 million, and 5G network traffic accounted for 47%. According to estimates by research institutions, in 2023, the total economic output directly driven by 5G is expected to reach 1.86 trillion yuan, an increase of 29% compared to 2022.
He stated that going forward, the MIIT will strengthen the construction of the 5G integrated application standard system, continue to promote the evolution of technologies and product development such as 5G-A and lightweight 5G. The ministry will accelerate 6G technology research, carry out technical experiments, strengthen technical reserves, and deepen exchanges and cooperation.
